An American accused of spying held March 4 in Cuba

. The American
Alan Gross, imprisoned in Havana in December 2009 on suspicion of espionage, will appear March 4 before a Cuban court in a case that could earn him a sentence of 20 years imprisonment.

Alan Gross, 61, was charged Feb. 4 with violations of state security for imported equipment of satellite communication under a U.S. program illegal on the communist island. The Obama administration claims its release.

U.S. officials at trial

Cuban authorities informed the United States the trial date, "said Molly Koscina, spokesman of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana. She said U.S. officials would attend.

Alan Gross was on a mission to Cuba for a company under contract with USAID, the U.S. federal agency for international development. Cuba said that his prosecutors would require a sentence of twenty years against him. The United States believes he broke no laws.
